Some Things Are Worth Keeping.
The story behind Old News Coffee Co.
There was a time when the coffee shop was more than a place to get coffee.
It was somewhere to meet an old friend, make a new one, read the newspaper, argue about something that mattered, or spend an afternoon doing absolutely nothing in particular.
You didn't need a reason to be there. You could just be.
We think there's still a place for that.
The Best of Yesterday, Served Today.
Old News Coffee Co. was founded on a simple conviction: not everything new is better, and not everything old deserves to be forgotten.
Some things have stood the test of time for good reason. A well-made cup of coffee. A familiar face. A comfortable chair. A conversation that lasts longer than you expected.
These things aren't outdated. They're timeless.
We're not particularly interested in recreating the past. We're interested in carrying forward the best parts of it.
That's where Old News gets its name.
A Coffee Shop for Albany.
We opened Old News in Albany, Texas, because we believe small towns deserve good places to gather.
Not just somewhere to buy something, but somewhere to belong.
We wanted to build the kind of coffeehouse where the regulars know each other, where strangers become acquaintances, and where nobody feels hurried out the door after finishing their drink.
A place for early mornings and slow afternoons. For business meetings, first dates, old friends, and people who just need a quiet corner for a while.
We sometimes call it an analog third place. That's a rather elaborate way of describing something that used to be perfectly ordinary: a place outside of home and work where people spend time together.
No membership required. No particular reason to visit.
Just come in.
Good Coffee, Without the Fuss.
Of course, none of this works without good coffee.
We take what goes into the cup seriously, from the beans we choose to the espresso we pull. We care about the details because they make a difference.
But we don't think good coffee should come with an attitude.
You shouldn't need to know the difference between a cortado and a cappuccino to feel welcome here. If you want to talk about coffee, we're happy to. If you just want your usual with a little cream, that's fine too.
Alongside the coffee, you'll find fresh pastries, something good for lunch, and a few other things we think are worth sharing.
Good quality, served without pretense.
Make Yourself at Home.
We've put a great deal of thought into the space itself.
The lighting, the furniture, the music, the friendly faces behind the bar. None of it is accidental. We wanted Old News to feel familiar even on your first visit, like somewhere you've been coming for years.
We believe the places we spend our time shape the way we spend our lives.
A room can encourage people to hurry along, or invite them to stay. It can make conversation awkward, or make it feel natural.
We'd rather build the second kind.
So bring a book. Bring a friend. Bring an idea worth discussing. Stay a little longer than you planned.
The Story Is Just Beginning.
Old News is still a young business built around some very old ideas.
We hope it becomes a small part of the everyday life of Albany. Somewhere people remember meeting, celebrating, thinking, laughing, and occasionally losing track of time.
And years from now, if someone says, "We've been coming here forever," we'll consider that a pretty good measure of success.
Some things are worth keeping.
We think this is one of them.
